Rust does not wait for the restoration season to end
Across American shops the late summer weeks are when winter projects get their parts cleaned, and the real choice is between blasting outdoors and losing the abrasive into the grass or working inside a sandblast cabinet that keeps every particle in the loop.
Open air blasting is quick to set up and expensive to run. The abrasive is used once and abandoned, the dust travels wherever the wind decides to take it, and the operator wears a good share of the results. Containment changes the economics before it changes anything else.
The machine is a loop rather than a box
Inside a sandblast cabinet the abrasive leaves the nozzle, strikes the part, and falls into a sloped hopper below. From there it is drawn back up to the gun and fired again. A single charge of media therefore performs hundreds of passes rather than one.
The loop only works while the broken particles are able to leave it. Abrasive fractures as it cuts, and the resulting fines remove nothing while clouding the air. A separator or vacuum stage pulls that dust away and returns only usable media to the gun.
Containment is a health decision before it is a cost decision
Blasting generates respirable dust from both the abrasive and the coating being removed. Older paint may also carry lead. A sealed enclosure with gloved openings keeps that mixture away from the operator and out of the wider shop, which no amount of outdoor distance reliably achieves.
Working conditions improve alongside safety. Parts sit at bench height under proper lighting, and the operator stands still instead of dragging a hose across a yard. A sandblast cabinet also runs in a garage on a wet afternoon without any of it reaching a neighbor.
The abrasive, not the machine, decides the finish
Aluminum oxide is angular and cuts, stripping heavy scale and leaving a rough anchor profile that primer grips well. Glass bead is round and peens rather than cuts. It produces a clean satin surface with far less material removed and no meaningful change to a machined dimension.
Gentler media exist for surfaces that tolerate neither. Walnut shell and crushed corn cob lift paint from aluminum, fiberglass, and thin panels without raising a profile, and plastic media do similar work on delicate parts. The same sandblast cabinet runs all of them, one charge at a time.
Air supply sets the pace more often than the operator does
A blasting gun consumes a steady volume of compressed air. A compressor unable to sustain that volume forces the work to stop and wait while pressure recovers. Matching the compressor to the nozzle is the most common oversight in a newly assembled blasting setup.
Moisture is the second supply problem. Damp air clumps the media, blocks the pickup tube, and leaves a spattered surface, so a dryer or water separator ahead of the machine matters as much as capacity. Nozzles also wear open with use and quietly raise consumption.
Visibility and dust extraction fail at the same moment
The view window is a consumable item. Abrasive rebounds off the part and frosts the glass within hours of use, so a replaceable protective film is fitted and changed on a schedule. Lighting is positioned where it will not glare through a scratched surface.
Extraction is what keeps that window usable. A vacuum filtration stage holds the interior under slight negative pressure and pulls airborne fines away, so the operator can still see the work. The same suction keeps dust inside the sandblast cabinet when the door is opened.
